Step 1 — Check the Fan Motor First

Before condemning the compressor, test the outdoor condenser fan motor. In Nigeria’s heat, a failed or degraded fan motor raises head pressure to destructive levels within 20–30 minutes. If the compressor failed due to high head pressure caused by a failed fan motor, fitting a new LG compressor without also replacing the fan motor will destroy the new compressor by the same mechanism — often within days of commissioning.

Step 2 — Check the Capacitor

Step 4 — Use the Correct Compressor Oil

LG rotary compressors for R410a systems require POE (polyolester) oil. LG compressors for R22 systems use mineral oil or alkylbenzene oil. LG CMA refrigerator compressors for R600a use mineral oil. Mixing oil types — particularly adding mineral oil to an R410a system designed for POE — causes oil separation and deposits that clog the refrigerant circuit and destroy the compressor bearing surfaces over time. Step 5 — Deep Vacuum Before Charging

Pull a deep vacuum to 500 microns or below using a proper two-stage vacuum pump. Hold for 30 minutes minimum and confirm the vacuum is not rising before charging. Moisture left in the system from an insufficient vacuum forms acid with the refrigerant that degrades compressor oil and winding insulation. A single-stage cheap vacuum pump does not achieve the vacuum depth needed to remove moisture from a refrigerant circuit — use a proper two-stage pump on every LG compressor replacement.

Step 6 — Charge by Weight, Not by Pressure

Charge the system with the correct refrigerant weight specified on the unit data plate — not by manifold gauge pressure alone. Pressure-only charging in Nigeria’s variable ambient conditions produces inconsistent charge weights that result in either undercharged or overcharged systems. An overcharged system raises discharge pressure and compressor discharge temperature. An undercharged system causes compressor oil return problems. Charge by weight using a digital refrigerant scale on every LG compressor replacement.
