R32 has a lower flammability limit than R410a — it is classified A2L (mildly flammable) by ASHRAE, unlike R22 and R410a which are A1 (non-flammable). In practice, R32 requires a significantly higher concentration in air (approximately 14.4% by volume) to ignite than most people associate with the word “flammable” — it is not easily ignitable under normal service conditions. However, Kenyan HVAC technicians working with R32 for the first time should observe these precautions: (1) do not use open flame or spark-producing tools in a confined, unventilated space where R32 has leaked; (2) use R32-rated (A2L-rated) service equipment including manifold gauges and recovery equipment that are designed for use with mildly flammable refrigerants; (3) check the system for leaks before any open-flame brazing work near R32 pipe runs; (4) store R32 cylinders away from heat sources and in well-ventilated spaces.
